How are the tarot and astrology related?
The zodiac wheel splits the sky into twelve signs, with their planets and the four elements. Esoteric tradition matched each of those pieces with a tarot card.

Twelve signs, seven planets and three elements make the twenty-two Major Arcana. That exact count is one of the reasons the correspondence proved so appealing.
Astrology and the tarot were born separately. It was the Golden Dawn, a British esoteric order founded in 1888, that fixed the system most people use today: a sign, planet or element for each Major Arcanum, and a decan for each card from 2 to 10. It is a symbolic reading. Use it as a tool for reflection, not as a closed truth; and it does not replace a natal chart.

We have followed the most widespread version today: The Emperor with Aries, The Star with Aquarius, and the modern planets added to The Fool, The Hanged Man and Judgement. Other versions, such as the original Golden Dawn, swap the places of The Emperor and The Star, and some decks number Strength and Justice differently. If your deck or your teacher uses another correspondence, it is not a mistake: it is another school.
